Team Canada Arrives in New Zealand

Christchurch, New Zealand | November 17, 2015

Team Canada has hit the ground running in Christchurch New Zealand this week.  The team is gearing up for the Asia Pacific Championship (APC), which begins on Tuesday, November 24, 2015.  The APC is a qualifier for the 2016 World Bowls Championship and Canada is looking to perform their best and qualify a full team for the 2016 Championship.

To help with the team success at the APC, Team Canada has implemented a new training plan to help with acclimatization and performance while abroad.  The athletes and support staff arrived a week in advance of the opening ceremony to give enough time to overcome jet lag and get some group practise sessions under their belt.

The entire team, with the exception of Alf Wallace, who is currently competing at the Champion of Champions in Australia, are living and training as one unit.  Team Canada will be staying together in rented houses as opposed to hotels to encourage team building, which will help the athletes on and off the green.

Day one on the ground and training sessions are already underway.  With New Zealand being known for its quick greens and vast winds, Team Canada is working hard to overcome this challenge with enough time before competition.  The team participated in a training camp last spring at the Pacific Indoor Bowls Club in Vancouver and was able to get a feel for quick greens, which will play to their advantage while at the APC.

In addition to the daily training sessions, Team Canada will get some game action in advance of the Championship.  The women are participating in a triples tournament at the end of the week and the men will face India in some pre-competition games.

Stay tuned for a full championship overview and competition breakdown, which will provide Canadian supporters with everything they need to know leading into the Asia Pacific Championship.
