Bowls Canada Boulingrin hosts Ground Breaking National Competition Review Summit

Toronto, Ontario | February 29, 2016

Bowls experts from across Canada gathered in Toronto, Ontario over the weekend to discuss and debate a national competition structure and bowler development pathway. With overall participation in national and provincial championships on a downward trend, Bowls Canada Boulingrin gathered an advisory group of provincially nominated representatives, competition experts, high performance bowlers, club bowlers, coaches, umpires and event organizers to tackle the challenge head on.

Led by nationally acknowledged Canadian Sport for Life expert Paul Jurbala, the group examined data provided by each provincial bowls association to validate the changing landscape of bowls in Canada.  They also explored the varied needs of bowlers along a continuum from first entry into the sport all the way to achieving high performance excellence.  Specifically, they delved into the opportunities and gaps that currently exist for Canadians to learn, improve and play the sport of bowls at a level that is meaningful to them.

As the discussion progressed it became very clear that while change is necessary, a quick fix would not address the many gaps identified.  The group was able to confirm a set of guiding principles and established progress towards a national competition model.  Out of the weekend, a working group was charged with a clear mandate to use the ideas generated to create a set of national recommendations.  These recommendations will go through a consultative process that will involve each provincial bowls association.  The end goal of the process is to establish a transparent national competition model and bowler pathway that will ensure that the sport of bowls remains relevant within the Canadian environment.

A summary report is being prepared will be distributed to each provincial bowls association through their Summit representative and Provincial President.
