Champions Crowned at the 2018 Canadian Lawn Bowling Championships

Champions have been crowned at the Canadian Lawn Bowling Championships in Regina, Saskatchewan. After four hotly contested days of competition, winners in the men’s and women’s fours and pairs have been crowned.


To start the day, the men’s pairs broke several ties on the greens. With a three way tie for first place, Saskatchewan A defeated Alberta to secure their place in the gold medal match. Alberta would then defeat Nova Scotia A to secure their birth in the gold medal match as well, while Nova Scotia A would be relegated to the bronze medal game. Also settling a tie was British Columbia A and Manitoba, who were tied for 4th place in the men’s pairs. Manitoba would emerge victorious and eliminate BC A from medal contention.
In the medal rounds, there were close matches all around. The women’s pairs was a battle of Alberta as Alberta B’s Cecilia Gillespie and Pat Vos would defeat Alberta A with a score of 17-14. In the bronze medal match, Manitoba would defeat Nova Scotia 20-15.


In the women’s fours, defending champions Josephine Lee, Pricilla Westlake, Sarina Mak, and Gigi Chan would defend their title as British Columbia B defeated Ontario B 12-9. In the bronze medal match, Saskatchewan A would defeat Alberta 18-13.


On the men’s side, Alberta would have their revenge on Saskatchewan A in the men’s pairs. Despite losing to SK A in the round robin and the tie-break match, Alberta’s Pat Bird and Jon MacDonald would emerge with the gold medal in a thrilling 19-8 match. In the bronze medal match, Manitoba took a convincing win over Nova Scotia A, 20-7.


The men’s fours would see Ontario A’s Jurgen Fessler, Gary Pickering, Michael Spadafora, and Mike Wagner defeat top-seeded Saskatchewan A by a score of 23-12. Manitoba would pick up another bronze medal by defeating British Columbia B, 22-8.


The coveted team trophies were awarded as well, with the Cy English (awarded to the top performing men’s team) given to Saskatchewan A, while the Lady Alexander (awarded to the top performing women’s team) was given to Alberta A.


With the conclusion of the fours and pairs, the outdoor singles will commence on August 27th at 9am. 24 men and 24 women will continue play at the Regina Lawn Bowling Club attempting to claim the national singles titles.

The 2018 Canadian Lawn Bowling Championships are an annual outdoor championship that feature both men and women competing across three disciplines: pairs, fours and singles. They will be held at the Regina Lawn Bowling Club in Regina, Saskatchewan from August 22nd to 29th, 2018.
