A Courageous Conversation about Mental Health on Bell Let’s Talk Day

Ottawa (ON) | January 28, 2021

Bell Let’s Talk Day is an annual opportunity to start conversations about mental health, and organisations and individuals across the country join the cause every year. This year Canadian National Lawn Bowls team member David-James Smith is taking his own step forward to help end the stigma around mental health.

In his courageous conversation with Bowls Canada’s Casey Donnelly, Smith talks about his life-long struggles with anxiety and depression. A very powerful conversation, there are times when the content is difficult to listen to. Smith is not alone in his struggle with mental illness.  According to the Canadian Mental Health Association, mental illness indirectly affects all Canadians at some time through a family member, friend or colleague.  In fact, about 1 in 5 Canadians will personally experience mental health concerns or illness..that’s around 6.7 million of us… and by age 40, about 50% of the population will have or have had a mental illness.  These stats make Smith’s conversation an essential one.

When asked why share his story now, Smith stated that if just one person watches this interview and then makes a call to get help, it will be worth it.  If you are suffering and you’re not sure who to turn to or where to go to find help, you can refer to this list of helpful resources. The Canadian Sport Helpline is another resource where victims and witnesses of harassment, abuse and discrimination which includes bullying, can safely report their concerns.

The theme for this year’s Bell Let’s Talk campaign is “Be There”, and Bowls Canada is taking this theme to heart by striking a Task Force to review our existing support systems and identify sustainable actions going forward.

In the meantime, we encourage you to keep the conversation going and educate yourself so you can “be there” for others around you who are struggling and support yourself and your loved ones as best you can.
